Why is David Livingstone—whose vision paved the way for colonial brutality and whose mission was weaponized for empire—a celebrated global icon?

This realization is the call to action: it is time to be fiercely critical about the Christianity we practice.

We are returning to the core question of influence and legacy - the Cost of True Mission. Why is David Livingstone—whose vision paved the way for colonial brutality and whose mission was weaponized for empire—a celebrated global icon, while Joseph Booth—the missionary who preached economic empowerment, demanded racial equality, and was deported for his fierce anti-colonial stance—is largely forgotten?

If the establishment's true aim was pure missions (saving souls, spreading the Gospel), then Booth should be the hero. The fact that the system persecuted Booth and enshrined Livingstone reveals a chilling truth:
The primary goal of the inherited mission
was not Gospel expansion;
it was Empire preservation.

This clarifies the essential thesis of Harvey Kwiyani, Ph.D.’s Decolonizing Mission: Serious, authentic mission has always been inextricably connected with social justice. A ministry that refuses to confront systems of injustice—be they colonial-era exploitation or modern-day unaccountable organizational control—is not practicing mission; it is practicing compliance.

Now, here's the Uncomfortable Truth for African Christianity. The pervasive nature of this colonial narrative is why many of us, as African Christians and church leaders, still celebrate Livingstone as though he single-handedly evangelized Southern Africa. We have merely accepted the narrative as given to us without serious critique.

This realization is the call to action: it is time to be fiercely critical about the Christianity we practice. The tension I experienced wasn't a flaw in me; it was the inevitable clash between a decolonizing spirit and an inherited, imperial structure that we have internalized.

The question for Christian leaders today is stark: Will you chase the celebrated, compromised legacy of a Livingstone—or accept the risk of being a Booth—persecuted for justice, but truly free?

How do we, as African Christian leaders, begin the work of de-sanctifying the compromised colonial narratives and restore the legacy of authentic, justice-driven prophets like Joseph Booth?
