The Four Cs of Compromise—When Civilization Justifies Conquest

In our Decolonizing Mission series, we've examined the historical DNA of empire in the church. Now, let's look at how that DNA manifested in real time, using a powerful example from Harvey Kwiyani, Ph.D.'s book.

The celebrated missionary David Livingstone famously articulated his mission around the "Three Cs": Christianity, Civilization, and Commerce. He genuinely believed that setting up an English colony was a "moral duty"—an essential part of civilizing Africa and establishing a 'legitimate' commerce to replace the slave trade.
This sounds noble, but Kwiyani shows us the profound compromise:
⛔ The fourth 'C' that overshadowed the first three was Colonialism.

Livingstone saw the goal of mission as using the English state to "colonize and to plant her Christianity" with his sons. The mission was built to be dependent on Western control.

The tragic result? Livingstone's own mission station, the Livingstonia Mission in Malawi, devolved into the brutal A. L. Bruce Estates, managed by his son and his daughter-in-law. The civilizing influence became systematic cruelty, physical abuse, and harsh treatment of locals.
This historical moment provides a painful clarity: The moment "civilization" (or "efficiency," or "structure") becomes a prerequisite for the Gospel, the mission is captured by the spirit of control. The Three Cs, intended for liberation, became tools of domination because they were built on the foundation of the Fourth C—Colonialism.

This is the historical blueprint for the modern problem of centralized, unaccountable power in ministry. The impulse to control funds and personnel is just the colonial impulse in contemporary clothing.

Where do you see the Fourth C (Control) subtly overshadowing mission today? What institutional practices, done in the name of "efficiency" or "civilization," accidentally suppress the agency and God-given leadership of local people?
